How much can I save on my CFE bill?
Installing solar panels can reduce your CFE bill by up to 98%, bringing your bimonthly bill down to a minimum connection charge.
How long do solar panels last?
Their useful life easily exceeds 30 to 40 years. Manufacturers usually offer a 30-year performance warranty, ensuring they will generate at least 80% of their initial capacity.
Do panels work on cloudy days or at night?
Solar panels generate electricity even on cloudy days because they capture radiation, although their efficiency is lower. At night, when there is no light, the home takes energy from the electric grid.
What happens with CFE if I install solar panels?
If you install solar panels, your electricity bill will decrease significantly and you will only receive a minimum connection charge from CFE. To achieve this, you must request a CFE Interconnection Contract so they can change your meter to a bidirectional meter, which records both the energy you consume and the energy you produce.
Will you keep paying CFE?
Most homes use grid-tied systems without batteries. This means:
- During the day: Your panels power your home; if you have surplus energy, it goes to the CFE grid.
- At night: You take energy from the CFE grid.
- The balance: CFE calculates how much energy you injected into the grid and how much you consumed. If you generated more than you used, that surplus is stored in your favor for months with less sun.
- The base charge: You will keep paying a required minimum amount, around $50 to $100 pesos, for interconnection rights and use of the public grid.
What happens if power goes out in the street?
Home solar systems have an anti-islanding safety system that automatically shuts your panels down during a general outage. This prevents energy from your panels from flowing into the grid and putting CFE workers repairing the lines at risk. You will not have power during the outage unless you have a system with backup batteries.
What happens if I install a solar panel without notifying CFE?
If you install solar panels without notifying Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), the conventional meter will register the energy your panels send to the public grid as additional consumption, which will make your electricity bills much more expensive.
